F1 Update: Lewis Hamilton Continues Sweeping The Awards As Days After Getting Honored By FIA, He Becomes BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2020.

What an amazing year Lewis Hamilton is having, seven times F1 Champion seems to be sweeping all the possible awards. On Sunday, December 20, Hamilton was conferred with BBC Sports Personality of the year 2020. Earlier this year in Istanbul Park Lewis Hamilton became 7 time F1 world champion to equal Michael Schumacher’s all time world championship record. Hamilton currently holds the record for most F1 wins & pole positions. “The Sports Personality of The Year” award decided through public voting and Hamilton came over the challenge of Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson,  jockey Hollie Doyle. Other nominees for the main awards were Boxer Tyson Fury, cricketer Stuart Broad and snooker great Ronnie O’Sullivan.

How Lewis Hamilton Reacted

Lewis thanked his supporters in gratitude message mentioning the award to be very special as it came from public voting. He also congratulated the other nominees, he added he wasn’t really expecting this as their were some great sports personalities nominated for the award. He said that he respect what they had achieved this year and they all are winners. Here is what he tweeted from his official account

“I been thinking of all those who voted to support me last night, I am truly so grateful. Thank you to the British public for this honour, it means the most because it comes from you. I’m sending you all positivity. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Last year in year 2019 Lewis Hamilton ended as runner up in Sports Personality of The Year award. It is the second time when he has won this prestigious award. He was able lay his hand on this trophy in year 2014.

FIA Special Award for Lewis Hamilton With Michael Schumacher

Earlier on December 19, FIA president Jean Todt chose Lewis Hamilton & Michael Schumacher for the special award in recognition of their shared achievement in  winning  7 FIA F1 World Championships. In a virtual ceremony which took place in Geneva both Lewis and Schumacher was awarded for their special achievement and the inspiration they brought with sporting and personal commitment.

“2020 has been an unprecedented year and it’s remarkable to be here and to be able to honour our champions,” said FIA President Jean Todt. “Unfortunately, they cannot be with us in person tonight, but the most important thing is that, through creativity and resourcefulness, we have been able to organize championships – and we have champions to celebrate. I would like to pay credit to all those who made it possible.” As quoted on FIA.com

On behalf of Michael Schumacher his wife Corinna accepted in person the President’s Special Award which her husband received jointly with Hamilton. An emotional Corinna stated

“Michael has always had a big heart to do something for people who are in need. With the Keep Fighting Foundation, we want to continue the work he started.”

Hamilton said: “It’s such a privilege to have the opportunity to reach the milestone. I didn’t think in my wildest dreams I would stand here as a seven-time World Champion.

“The Hamilton Commission is about breaking down barriers and creating opportunity and opening up more doors for everyone. I’m really hopeful that, together with the FIA and Formula 1, we can move forward in this direction.”

Jean Todt  The FIA president added: “Michael and Lewis are champions but also incredible human beings. Michael was always ready to support any kind of action to benefit society, for example his work on road safety. To have people like Michael and Lewis to engage with and educate young people is essential.” As quoted on FIA.com

Lewis Hamilton Sweeping Other Awards At FIA Prize Giving

Hamilton ended up receiving three awards that night. He won the Personality of the Year award the other nominee for this awards were Pierre Gasly, Lando Norris, Kimi Räikkönen, Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen, the outgoing CEO of Formula 1 Chase Carey, Mercedes-AMG Petronas CEO and Team Principal Toto Wolff as well as WRC rally star Elfyn Evans.

Hamilton was also awarded the Automobile Club d’Italia (ACI) Trophy as he became the the highest points’ scorer across the three Italian Formula 1 Grands Prix staged this season. Hamilton scored total 59 points in those three races, including two wins and one 7th place finish. Lewis was able to collect the additional points awarded for fastest laps on all three occasions. The trophy was given to him by Angelo Sticchi Damiani, , FIA Vice-President and the President of the Italien Automotive Club ACI.
