It was evident for first two day’s play that West Indies will need miraculous effort to save the first test match against India. That didn’t happen and it is sad that West Indies could not even fight. India won the first test match by innings and 272 runs as West Indies scored 196 runs in their second innings.
Skipper Kraigg Brathwaite and Kieran Powell started the innings. Brathwaite failed again as West Indies lost their first wicket at 32 runs when debutant Prithvi Shaw caught him on Ashwin’s bowling. Brathwaite scored 10 off 30 balls.
Shai Hope came to accompany Powell and both added 47 runs for the 2nd wicket. Kuldeep Yadav trapped Shai Hope in front of the stumps when Windies scoreboard showed 79. Hope added 17 off 34 balls.
Shimron Hetmyer and Sunil Ambris went back to the hut soon after scoring 11 (11) and 0 (3). West Indies were struggling at 97-4 now. Roston Chase then joined Kieran Powell and both took West Indies to 138. At this score, Chase was out after scoring 20 off 24 balls. Powell was the next one to go back after scoring 83 off 93 balls.

Kuldeep Yadav took all the 5 wickets after 1st wicket taken by Ashwin. In lower order wicketkeeper-batsman Shane Dowrich remained not our at 16* off 64 balls. Keemo Paul scored 15 off 15 balls while Devendra Bishoo added 9 off 12 balls. Sherman Lewis and Shannon Gabriel scored 4 (15) and 4 (5) balls respectively.
For India Ravichandran Ashwin took 2-71 while Ravindra Jadeja took 3-35. Star of the day was Kuldeep Yadav though who took 5-57. India is now up 1-0 in the series and both teams will play the second test match at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad from Oct 12, Fri – Oct 16, Tue.
