French GP 2019 Qualifying Race Results: Lewis Hamilton Takes 86th Career Pole.

Canadian GP Controversy:

Defending champion Lewis Hamilton won the Canadian GP for a record-equaling 7 times. However, his latest in Canada came under controversial circumstances. Lewis reached the finish line second to Sebastian Vettel, however, he got the win as Seb was handed a 5 second time penalty by stewards for unsafe return to the track.

The incident took place in lap 48 of Canadian GP, after switching to hard compound tyres, Hamilton was able to improve his pace incredibly. When he was on the medium compound tyre the Vettel was able to increase the gap up to 5 seconds. However, as soon as Hamilton switched to the hard compound, he started reducing the gap to the leader. He soon brought it down to 1 second and started putting pressure on Vettel.

In the Lap 48 the gap was only 0.7 second, under pressure Vettel lost control of his vehicle at 3rd corner and slipped to grass. Hamilton saw the opportunity and went for the gap created. However, Vettel quickly returned to the track and kept on moving towards the wall to deny his rival any overtaking chances. Hamilton had to back off as Vettel quickly closed the gap which was considered an unsafe return to the track by Stewards and it finally cost him the win. He took 5 second time penalty for this mistake, all Hamilton had to manage the 5-second gap to win the race which he did.

The FIA Rule:

Should a car leave the track the driver may rejoin, however, this may only be done when it is safe to do so and without gaining any lasting advantage.

Vettel’s View: He lost control and had dirt on his wheel there was nowhere to go.
