The ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event Madrid Open on the 2017 ATP World Tour schedule will be played from 5 – 14 May. This will be 16th edition of the tournament. It is clay court tournament and will be played at Park Manzanares, Madrid in Spain. For 2017 edition Andy Murray is the top seed followed by Serbian Novak Djokovic at the second seed. Stan Wawrinka and Rafael Nadal will follow at third and fourth seed respectively. Roger Federer has withdrawn from the tournament this time and has been replaced by Kyle Edmund.
Ion Țiriac, former Romanian ATP player is the current owner of the tournament. Prize money for the tournament is €9,542,720. In regards to surface the tournament was played from 2002 through 2008 on indoor hardcourts; however, from 2009 onward the tournament has been played on clay courts (Red surface). In a controversial decision Blue clay surface was officially approved for the 2012 edition of the tournament; however, the Red clay surface returned to tournament in 2013.
The first edition of the Madrid Open was played in 2002. Andre Agassi was crowned the winner of the tournament. In 2003 Juan Carlos Ferrero won the tournament followed by Marat Safin winning it in 2004. In the fourth edition of the tournament in 2005 18 year old Rafael Nadal won the Madrid Open. The next year in 2006 one of the all-time great roger Federer won his first Madrid Open title. The 6th edition of 2007 went to David Nalbandian.
In 2008 Andy Murray won his first Madrid Open. Five of the next six Madrid Open titles went to Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Roger Federer won again in 2009 and 2012. Rafael Nadal took his tally to four Madrid Open titles winning the tournament in 2010, 2013, 2014. Novak Djokovic won his first Madrid Open in 2011. In 2015 Andy Murray won his second Madrid Open. The 15th edition was won by Novak Djokovic taking his tally to two Madrid Opens.
